Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST)
A vigorous Mid-Scale Innovations Program (MSIP) was recommended by the 2010 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, citing "many highly promising projects for achieving diverse and timely science." As described in this solicitation, the Division of Astronomical Sciences has established a mid-scale program to support a variety of astronomical activities within a cost range up to $30M. This program will be formally divided into four subcategories: 1) limited term, self-contained science projects; 2) longer term mid-scale facilities; 3) development investments for future mid-scale and large-scale projects; and 4) community open access capabilities. The MSIP will emphasize both strong scientific merit and a well-developed plan for student training and involvement of a diverse workforce in instrumentation, facility development, or data management.

The Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program awards relatively small grants to support the planning stages of digital projects that promise to benefit the humanities. The program supports both new projects in early stages of development and efforts to reinvigorate existing or dormant projects in innovative ways. Proposals should be for the planning or initial stages of digital initiatives in any area of the humanities. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants may involve • creating or enhancing experimental, computationally-based methods or techniques for humanities research, teaching, preservation, or public programming; • pursuing scholarship that examines the history, criticism, and philosophy of digital culture and its impact on society, or explores the philosophical or practical implications and impact of digital humanities in specific fields or disciplines; or • revitalizing and/or recovering existing digital projects that promise to contribute substantively to scholarship, teaching, or public knowledge of the humanities.
There is no standard format for the letter of intent. Letters of Intent serve multiple purposes; they help the IES Standards and Review Office get a sense of the kinds of expertise that might be needed to review incoming proposals and they also help connect applicants with IES program officers, who can help determine the most appropriate goal and topic. To aid in that process, I recommend to potential applicants to provide a brief description of the research project idea, outlining the major research questions, target student population, student educational outcomes, teacher/principle/etc. outcomes, theory of change, and key end-products. Often these brief descriptions or proposal summaries help us to get a better sense of the project and provide the most appropriate assistance to potential applicants. Be sure to specify whether the teachers you’re proposing to work with are individuals who have not yet been hired as a K-12 teacher or whether in-service teachers would be included in the target teacher population. Target teacher population has implications for the Goals a proposal would be appropriate for under the new RFA.

Your summary is excellent. I've been in five conversations about your study:
Rich Ryan at the Fredonia College Foundation about being the recipient of funds from regional foundations;
Judy Horowitz, my boss (Associate Provost for Graduate Studies, Sponsored Programs and Faculty Development) who saw the implications for NSF grants, local cooperation and cross disciplinary work, she cautioned against having your ideas stolen;
Sam Mason via email, about the implications for purchasing her a boat and then equipment that would serve both your interests with more NSF money;
Jason Dilworth: from the Art Department who is a student of place. He told me about a forestry conference attended by a group of international folks interested in forests and how we interact with them. We wondered if certain trees or shrubs planted along creeks and streams emptying into the lake would absorb the types of nutrients you find are assisting or causing the blooms. Great guy to round out narratives on the interface of science and local projects.
Mike Jabot, Science Educator here with ties a numerous local organizations, schools, especially Cornell Cooperative Extension. Be good to have on board. He mentioned an article on certain types of trees that absorb certain types of nutrients. I'll ask him about it again.
This led me to the next conversation I hope to have tomorrow with Randy Sweeney of the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation and Linda Swanson of the Sheldon Foundation at a meeting of the Chautauqua County Education Coalition on how they feel about funding your research. If I don't see them there I'll call them both soon and get their thoughts.
I thought your summary will do fine, but if you want to edit again let me know. I'd like to be able to take it or send it out to local funders as the explanation of the work. I'll get a number for undergraduates working; how many hours a week in the summer and then during the semesters would you think they would work?

I just got off the phone with some colleagues up in Canada. We are discussing a potential international grant application to look at some of the issues/questions related to microplastics within the St. Lawrence Seaway. We each have different areas of specialization (Fish Biologist, Ecologist, Chemist), so our questions can be far-reaching and ecosystem-wide. We also think another hook could be the fact that the St. Lawrence represents the connector between the freshwater great lakes and the ocean. Plus the international flavor of our US-Canada collaboration.We are each brainstorming potential funding agencies and I wondered if you had any thoughts or insights into a particular agency or RFP that might be of interest to us.
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is a maybe, but I thin we are thinking more ecosystem-wide than just fish and wildlife so some of the others are probably better.

Invited EAGER proposals must be submitted via Fastlane or Grants.gov using following the NSF's Grant Proposal Guide instructions and should clearly indicate the reason that the work would be appropriate for EAGER support: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2014/nsf14044/nsf14044.pdf
2. Early-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) The EAGER funding mechanism may be used to support exploratory work in its early stages on untested, but potentially transformative, research ideas or approaches. This work may be considered especially "high risk-high payoff" in the sense that it, for example, involves radically different approaches, applies new expertise, or engages novel disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives. These exploratory proposals may also be submitted directly to an NSF program, but the EAGER mechanism should not be used for projects that are appropriate for submission as “regular” (i.e., non-EAGER) NSF proposals. PI(s) must contact the NSF program officer(s) whose expertise is most germane to the proposal topic prior to submission of an EAGER proposal. This will aid in determining the appropriateness of the work for consideration under the EAGER mechanism; this suitability must be assessed early in the process.
The Project Description is expected to be brief (five to eight pages) and include clear statements as to why this project is appropriate for EAGER funding, including why it does not “fit” into existing programs and why it is a “good fit” for EAGER. Note this proposal preparation instruction deviates from the standard proposal preparation instructions contained in this Guide; EAGER proposals must otherwise be compliant with the GPG.
The box for “EAGER” must be checked on the Cover Sheet.
Only internal merit review is required for EAGER proposals. Under rare circumstances, program officers may elect to obtain external reviews to inform their decision. If external review is to be obtained, then the PI will be so informed in the interest of maintaining the transparency of the review and recommendation process. The two standard NSB-approved merit review criteria will apply.
Requests may be for up to $300K and of up to two years duration. The award size, however, will be consistent with the project scope and of a size comparable to grants in similar areas.
No-cost extensions, and requests for supplemental funding, will be processed in accordance with standard NSF policies and procedures.
Renewed funding of EAGER awards may be requested only through submission of a proposal that will be subject to full external merit review. Such proposals would be designated as “EAGER renewals.”

This work could be considered especially "high risk-high payoff" in the sense that it, involves radically different approaches, applies new expertise, or engages novel disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives. Exploratory proposals may also be submitted directly to an NSF program. Principal Investigators (PIs) must contact the NSF program officer(s) whose expertise is most germane to the proposal topic prior to submission of an EAGER proposal to determine the appropriateness of the work for consideration under the EAGER mechanism. The EAGER mechanism should not be used for projects that are appropriate for submission as “regular” (i.e., non-EAGER) NSF proposals. Few thoughts on Chautauqua Institution. I studied philanthropy there as an ethnographer. It's a very diverse place even though it looks homogeneous from the outside. Getting in front of the right people might take a few tries, but would be well worth your efforts to establish your group and to add to your list of performance venues.
There are few approaches I would recommend, the first and most obvious is through the music department. They have a music festival in June and here is the application page: http://music.ciweb.org/how-to-apply-instrumental/. They have specialties in Piano, Instrumental and Voice. Next would be contacting the folks under Marty Merkley and a phone call as well as email might be good idea, maybe even a visit with one of them to give you a feel for the kinds of opportunities available. Wendy Limbergwlimberg@ciweb.org, 716.357.6232 and Sheryl Thayer sthayer@ciweb.org, 716.357.6399 are both Program Coordinators under Marty in the Programming office. Teresa Adamstadams@ciweb.org, 716.357.6255 is the Assistant Director of Education, Director of Special Studies who would cover the teaching of specific classes if your thinking of offering a class.
Another interesting connection would be through the Chautauqua Foundation, the fundraising and endowment side of the organization. If you'd be willing to do a free performance at one of their functions, you might find other opportunities. I have met both Tina Cordner Downeytcordner@ciweb.org, 716.357.6406Director of the Chautauqua Fund (their annual appeal) and Megan Sorenson msorenson@ciweb.org, 716.357.6243 the Assistant Director. Megan being the underling in this case might be open to discussing your idea and bringing it up the line. The Fine and Performing Arts have a $12.5 million endowment (as of 2011).
The Cohen Sound Studio is their recording studio in the basement of the Smith Library: http://www.ciweb.org/cohen-sound-studio. A conversation with Matt Wilson who runs the studio cohenstudio@ciweb.org might prove enlightening. He might also have suggestions for who to contact for performing for the various groups and clubs (like the Women's Club http://www.chautauquawomensclub.org/) or the numerous ecumenical houses on the grounds.
This is a decent start on the Institution. Glad to hear you're pursuing a marketing plan and social media outlets. Great exposure and will give you additional material with which to write your proposals

Mid-Scale Innovations Program in Astronomical Sciences (MSIP)
Synopsis of Program:- A vigorous Mid-Scale Innovations Program (MSIP) was recommended by the 2010 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, citing "many highly promising projects for achieving diverse and timely science." As described in this solicitation, the Division of Astronomical Sciences has established a mid-scale program to support a variety of astronomical activities within a cost range up to $30M.

Actually the JM McDonald Foundation's region is Upstate NY and JM was very interested in funding schools. See History. Perhaps they would be interested in the school tour program. Don McJunkin is the President and I believe grandson of JM. He is the person I worked with. He lives in Colorado which is also the address of the Foundation. But he comes to Upstate NY to visit organizations he might be interested in. Or at least he did a few years ago.

Tech for Disaster Response
OSTP is partnering with a number of organizations and Federal agencies to build innovative, technological, and crowd-sourced disaster-response tools that can dramatically improve the Nation’s ability to respond to large-scale disasters. Following Hurricane Sandy, for example, OSTP collaborated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to develop a new documentation system to help citizens more easily find housing and receive financial housing assistance. OSTP also coordinated with companies to provide information about open gas stations, restaurants, and hotels so the supply and demand challenges after a national disaster could be addressed more efficiently than before.NYSRF: TAF

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Your summary is excellent. I've been in five conversations about your study:
- Rich Ryan at the Fredonia College Foundation about being the recipient of funds from regional foundations;
- Judy Horowitz, my boss (Associate Provost for Graduate Studies, Sponsored Programs and Faculty Development) who saw the implications for NSF grants, local cooperation and cross disciplinary work, she cautioned against having your ideas stolen;
- Sam Mason via email, about the implications for purchasing her a boat and then equipment that would serve both your interests with more NSF money;
- Jason Dilworth: from the Art Department who is a student of place.
- Mike Jabot, Science Educator here with ties a numerous local organizations, schools, especially Cornell Cooperative Extension.
If I don't see them there I'll call them both soon and get their thoughts.Here's an interesting NSF grant we could talk about as well: Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH).
I thought your summary will do fine, but if you want to edit again let me know. I'd like to be able to take it or send it out to local funders as the explanation of the work. I'll get a number for undergraduates working; how many hours a week in the summer and then during the semesters would you think they would work?

Research Funding
The Marine Debris Program's FY17 Research funding opportunity is now available, with proposals due December 19, 2016. The announcement is available on Grants.gov at the following link: http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=289016
This opportunity provides funding to support eligible organizations to conduct research directly related to marine debris through field, laboratory, and modeling experiments. Applicants requesting funding for research that explores the ecological risk associated with marine debris, determines debris exposure levels, and examines the fate and transport of marine debris in nearshore, coastal environments are welcome to apply. Projects may address one or more of these research priorities and should be original, hypothesis-driven projects that have not previously been addressed to scientific standards.

The individual programs covered within this solicitation include:

- http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/grants.html a few continuous technical grants and then should be a fresh batch coming for next year

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is a maybe, but I thin we are thinking more ecosystem-wide than just fish and wildlife so some of the others are probably better.http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/search-grants.html?keywords=NOAA take a look at the 2014 - 2015 Broad Agency Announcement (BAA):
You had a couple NSF areas and I am wondering if the Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems is the best fit. Should I/We reach out to the program officer/director and Discuss our thoughts/ideas in order to verify if that is the best NSF area to apply to?
NOAA and GLPF are similar to NSF, in that i feel we should contact them about the fit before applying. Again is that some I should do, or if we sketched something out (1-page overview) could you do it on our behalf?

2. Early-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER)
The EAGER funding mechanism may be used to support exploratory work in its early stages on untested, but potentially transformative, research ideas or approaches.

Wendy Limberg wlimberg@ciweb.org, 716.357.6232 and Sheryl Thayer sthayer@ciweb.org, 716.357.6399 are both Program Coordinators under Marty in the Programming office.
Teresa Adams tadams@ciweb.org, 716.357.6255 is the Assistant Director of Education, Director of Special Studies who would cover the teaching of specific classes if your thinking of offering a class.
Another interesting connection would be through the Chautauqua Foundation, the fundraising and endowment side of the organization. If you'd be willing to do a free performance at one of their functions, you might find other opportunities. I have met both Tina Cordner Downey tcordner@ciweb.org, 716.357.6406Director of the Chautauqua Fund (their annual appeal) and Megan Sorenson msorenson@ciweb.org, 716.357.6243 the Assistant Director.
